Platteville

Hugh O'Connell, age 72, of Platteville, WI, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, while at home, surrounded by the comfort of his wife and children.

Born on August 29, 1953, to Donald and Irene O'Connell, Hugh grew up learning the value of hard work as the youngest sibling on their Eastman family farm. He was an active member of the FFA during his youth, and after graduating, he went on to receive his Bachelor's degree in Management from UW-Platteville.

Hugh served his country in the U.S. Army as an Aircraft Rotor and Propeller Repairman, a service that included being stationed in West Germany. Upon returning to civilian life, Hugh embraced his entrepreneurial spirit. He worked as an independent restauranteur for many years and held various positions throughout his career, but his claim to fame will always be two culinary innovations; the DQ blizzard tip and the world's first conkrete shake.

Despite living with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years, Hugh possessed an indomitable spirit. He never lost his can-do attitude nor his optimistic outlook on life and had an aphorism for any situation. In his retirement, he found joy in watching his favorite game shows, feeding the birds, and taking his scooter out along the Rountree Branch Trail. Above all, he cherished the time spent with Lynn, his children, and his grandchildren.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Lynn; his four children, Shane (Michelle) O'Connell, Jordan (Annie) O'Connell, Corey (Britney) O'Connell, and Megan (Max) Kulick; and his eleven grandchildren. He is further survived by five siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Irene, and six siblings.

A small graveside service with military honors will be performed at Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien, WI later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Hugh's name to the MS Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, causes that were dear to Hugh’s heart. Kramer-Grau Funeral Homes & Crematory in Platteville is entrusted with his care.
