Thomas D. Davies

LANCASTER - Thomas D. Davies, known to all simply as Tom, was a man of boundless energy, quiet generosity, a sharp wit, and an unshakeable devotion to his family and community. Passing away peacefully on July 24, 2026, just shy of his 91st birthday, Tom leaves behind a legacy defined by love, service, and humor. The second youngest of 11 siblings, he learned early on in a bustling household the value of hard work, the importance of looking out for others, and the joy of a good joke.

A lifelong learner and dedicated educator, Tom earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville before completing his Master’s Degree in Administration at Winona State University. His passion for helping every child succeed led him to become a champion for special education, a steadfast advocate for students with unique needs, and serve as the proud Principal of Winskill Elementary. Over his decades in education, his leadership, master organizing skills, and commitment to excellence earned him numerous professional awards and the lifelong respect of colleagues and students alike.

Beyond the school walls, Tom was a cornerstone of his community. As an active, long-time member of the Lions Club, he dedicated countless hours to local service, earning several distinguished awards for his leadership.

A true natural athlete and coach, Tom was just as comfortable on the field or in the bowling alley as he was leading a staff meeting. He was a genuine sodbuster, woodcutter, and enjoyed gardening.

Humor, laughter, and connection were at the heart of everything Tom did. He was a master joke-teller and comedian who could light up any room, caller of the circle two-step, and always up for a good laugh with friends. He loved camping, going for scenic car rides, and spotting deer alongside the love of his life, Shirley, while enjoying an iced coffee together.

Above all his accomplishments, Tom was the ultimate family man. Married for 70 incredible years to his wife, Shirley Davies, he lived his life with open doors and a generous heart, always giving to anyone who needed a hand. He embraced every role he held with a full heart—son, brother, husband, dad, granddad, great-granddad, godfather, uncle, coach, mentor, and friend.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; their five children: oldest daughter Cheryl Burbank and her husband Rick, son John Davies and his wife Linda, middle daughter Cathy Freye and her husband Dennis Starrett, daughter Pam Kurihara and her husband Dave, and youngest son Jeff Davies and his wife Kelly. He also leaves behind 13 cherished grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, his surviving brother Doug, and sister Nancy, his extended family, and a wide circle of friends who will deeply miss his warmth, sharp sense of humor, and steadfast presence.

Tom was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Scott Freye, as well as his beloved brothers and sisters: Buzz, Ed, Dick, Pidge, Don, Margaret, Emma, and Mary Lou.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 12:00 Noon, at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Rev. Erika Martinez-Flores and Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Private family burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends may visit on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Kramer-Grau Funeral Homes & Crematory in Lancaster is entrusted with his care.
